Mr. Hristo Hristov: “We want to achieve change through programmes for democracy, sustainable economic development, and security in line with the partner countries’ needs”

“The aim of EU support for the Southern Mediterranean is to achieve change through structured dialogue and comprehensive cooperation programmes aimed at establishing democracy, strengthening sustainable and inclusive economic development, and building security in line with the partner countries’ needs,” said to the participants in the Summer Academy Mr. Hristo Hristov, who is a programme coordinator of the EU-CoE Joint Programme “Towards Strengthened Democratic Governance in the Southern Mediterranean” at the  Council of Europe. Mr. Hristov presented the results achieved in the region in the period 2012-2015 through the joint efforts of the EU and Council of Europe and South 1 program: improving the legal framework for combating corruption and human trafficking, promotion of democratic values, of NGOs and youth empowerment. South Program II will continue to contribute for promoting human rights, rule of law and democracy in the southern Mediterranean, said Mr. Hristov. He placed emphasis on regional cooperation in these areas, stressed the importance of both – creation of common legal standards in Europe and the Southern Mediterranean based on the Council of Europe`s Conventions, and building of sustainable democratic institutions.
